\nAbout the Photographer\n

\nAled Rhys Hughes is a lens-based artist from south Wales. He has been described by critics as a ?maestro? and Peter Finnemore described his ?images full with their emptiness and subtlety.? He has always been intrigued by the shape, form and history of the landscape of his home in south Wales. Most recently, the sea has been the focus of his work, in photographs inspired by R. S. Thomas?s ?The sea starts where the land ends; its surface is all flowers.? \n

\nHis work has been displayed in group shows and individual exhibitions since 1984, at venues in Wales including the National Library of Wales, MOMA Cymru, Wales Millennium Centre, Mission Gallery Swansea (2010), and St David?s Hall Cardiff (2011), and in various galleries across Europe. At the prestigious National Eisteddfod he has been awarded the Gold Medal for Fine Art in 2006 (purchased by Glynn Vivian Gallery through a CASW award) and the People?s Choice Award in 2008. His work is also owned by the University of Aberystwyth, the National Library of Wales and by private collectors. \n

\nAled?s work was included in Welsh Lens (Machynlleth, 1997: MOMA Cymru), a showcase of young Welsh talent, and he has published two books, M?r Goleuni Tir Tywyll (Llandysul, 2004: Gomer) and Rhyw Deid yn Dod Miwn (Llandysul, 2008: Gomer), which won the Welsh Publishing Industry Award in 2010 for the best illustrated book from the previous three years. \n
