Title Photographs of the German Landscape

Author Sander, August

ISBN: 9780943044330

Condition: softcover

Well known for his portraits and documentary photography of the German people this book contains lesser known images taken from the German landscape

Inspired by Goethe and Eug?ne Atget, among others, German photographer August Sander's monumental work influenced photographers as different as Walker Evans, Diane Arbus, and his contemporaries Bernd and Hilla Becher.
This catalog documents an exhibit of Sander's landscape images in silver gelatin prints at the Phillips Gallery in Washington, D.C.
From portrait views of indivdiual trees to panoramic forests and mountain views that reveal a hint of human presence (or absence), the 29 landscape and nature photographs here portray the German landscape of the 1930s and 1940s, comparable to how Sander's earlier, renowned photographs of individual Germans formed an unsentimental portrait of a people.
