Perhaps best remembered as the quintessential London photographer of the Swinging Sixties, fashion photographer and photojournalist David Bailey's subject matter in the following decade became truly international. The tone was set by his first major assignment for Vogue in January 1970, a fashion shoot placing models in front of dramatic environmental backdrops in Turkey. Bailey appeared to use exotic sittings as a means to fulfill his childhood ambition as an explorer, while at the same time becoming a consummate master of studio fashion. Coinciding with the rapid growth of photographic galleries, he sought to photograph cultures that fascinated him, producing incisive documents of India, Mexico, Japan, Brazil, and New Guinea, culminating with reportages of the Vietnamese boat people fleeing the communist regime in dangerous sea crossings. This collection of 250 photographs, reproduced in color and duotone, include samples of these works and also portraits of such figures as Mick Jagger, Jack Nicholson, Quentin Crisp, Fred Astaire, Serge Gainsbourg, and Margaret Thatcher.
