God is Everywhere came as “a vision” in Latin America – a part of the world where faith is predominantly and heavy-handedly Catholic, and its symbolism is everywhere. At every turn, one encounters Jesus and Mary, who seem to be watching over, protecting the people, who may not have much in terms of material wealth, but their faith is all-encompassing. But Jesus and Mary have become ubiquitous in a way that is already banal: they are everywhere that you can possibly imagine – and even where you never could have. The globalism takes the form of an absurd mixture of Christianity and Capitalism: it's your choice – Coke, Pepsi – or Mary? Most blatant is the pairing of Sagrada Familia wall plaques and piggy banks – with dollar-signs, of course. (Blessed be Thy home…) Jesus looks down at them with the same sorrow in his eyes that I feel… Most remarkable is the butcher shop: the still life with at least two foci – the Madonna, and the side of beef – but there is also the first aid kit and the apron. We hope the Madonna has done her job, so that the first aid was not necessary… Here, and in general, it is also the intensity of the colour that is most striking, and the combinations of colour. The deep, shiny aqua behind the red of the tablecloth – and the bloody meat. The simple composition of white and gold with Jesus is minimally divine. Another remarkable shot seems to be taken in a submarine – murky, swampy green and a fan that has come to a standstill, and Jesus is completely submerged in blood and roses. But everyone can have their own personal Jesus – in the form of a bumper sticker or a tattoo, and even the woman of the world's oldest profession has Jesus watching over her workplace, her bed. Let's hope that he treats her as kindly as Mary Magdalene… And finally, there is Room 108 in the Hotel Brasilia (in Mexico) – the photographer had his own Jesus protecting the room and its occupant – but just in case, the fire extinguisher is there too. |
